About that street cleaning in the Clock House area

Was there much point to it? I mean, there's an awful lot of detritus (love that word) still in the gutters.

I know all those cars that were left parked in the way won't have helped (incidentally, I'm glad they weren't ticketed or removed, since some people might have been way when the notification letters were delivered) but still, I'm not convinced much was done other than attacking the drains.

Also, weren't the pavements meant to be included? Does anyone know?

I'm rambling. I'll stop. It's time for me to go home anyway.

Understand your comments re the non-ticketing of parked cars belonging to residents who may not have been aware of the clean-up, but in Durban Road the attitude of Hospital Staff and patients was nothing less than disgusting. So many of them parked on the wrong side of the road it became an absolute joke. No point in putting up no parking signs if they can be ignored with no penalty. Large stretches of the top of our road could not be cleaned properly - but, hey, thats ok we only waited for 3 years for this clean up - so the council can come back in 2012 to finish the job!!

Funny you should mention it. When the opposite side of the road to us was done it was generally pretty clear (less so the next day when our side was done) but I saw a commuter parking her car apparently oblivious to the signs on the trees/lamposts and the fact that it was SO CLEAR on that side. Worse still, there was one of the cleaning vehicles with the accompanying staff just a few feet away and they didn't say a word to her.

It all seems a bit half-hearted to me.

One obvious thing the Council seem to have not considered when it fixes its yellow notices to the lamp posts about forthcoming street cleaning cleaning is that the cleaning day is referred to only by date. How often do people suddenly pause and say, "Er... what's the date today?"

If the notices read, "Thursday, this week" there's less calculation involved and there might be a better response.

True, but then there's no telling if the sign has been left there from the previous week...best to include the day with the date, I reckon.

Next week's batch of streets to be tackled under the DeepClean programme includes Maberley Road and Ancaster Road in the ElmersEnd area. See attached. I watched the deep-cleaners in action last week on the evens-side of Cromwell Road. Actually, I thought they were pretty effective. One guy paces along the pavement firing his high-pressure water-jet hose right across the pavement and along the roadside-gutters. The second guy drives very slowly with a vacuum-cleaner device attached to his vehicle, sucking up all the water, leaves, detritus, etc. The whole stretch of road took about 30-45 minutes. Pity they don't do this more often. There were only about three or four cars still parked in the target area. Unlike previous "action days", there was no action to lift these cars or tow them to the other side of the road or round the corner. Should those cars have been towed/lifted? I think the programme/calendar ought to be distributed much more widely and with much more advance notice - as well as putting up the yellow street signs announcing the date (I agree with Jeff, those signs really must show the date). My apologies for not posting to this site the calendars I possessed before, REG.
